Adoptive Parents

Can we specify the sex of our baby?

Can we specify the sex of our baby?

We can not commit to a gender preference of the baby. We ask that all birth mothers have an ultrasound during their general prenatal doctors visits. However, some birth mothers who sign up very late in their preganancy may not be able to determine the sex due to the size of the baby during the ultrasound. Ultrasounds are a wonderful way to determine size, sex and due date of the baby, however the sex of the child in an ultrasound may not always be accuarte. While prospective adoptive parents may have a desire for one sex over another, we ask that you keep in mind there are no guarantees just as if you were carriyng the child yourself. Most adoptive parents just want to raise a healthy, happy child no matter the sex.

What will the birth mother be like?

Many different types of women choose adoption as a choice for thier child. They may be college students, single mothers or even married women, each with their own unique reason for placing their baby for adoption. Sometimes a woman decides to place her baby for financial reasons, while others place for emotional reasons. We are not here to judge a birth mother for her choices, only to assist her in making the right choice at a difficult time in her life.

What will we know about the background and medical information of the birth parents?

We require that all birth parents fill out and extensive medical and background questionare, and to sign medical and drug testing consents. We can ask her about her general health and prenatal care, but when it comes down to it, we just have to take her at her word about her daily health and habits. The agency will monitor and request medical records and test results from the doctor or midwife throughout the pregnancy.

Little Angels will not work with a mother who is using drugs.

In some cases, the mother comes to us very late or after the birth, in those cases we may not have prenatal records due to late or lack of adequate prenatal care. After the birth of the child, Florida law now reguires that all families be provided with a full copy of the baby and the birth mother's medical chart from the hospital.

How much will the entire adoption process cost?

A completed adoption may vary depending on legal fees involved, the expenses of the birth mother and the location of the birth mother or prospective adoptive parents. Florida law allows the adoptive family to support a pregnant woman throughout her pregnacy with "reasonable living expenses". Among other things this may include; rent, food, utilities, medical, counsling and maternity clothing. Most of our birth mothers have some type of medical coverage, if they do not we can assist them in applying for medicaide in an effort to keep the adoption expeses to a minimum. Legal fees and home study fees are seperate from this agencys fees.

Can I adopt if I do not live in the state of Florida?

Yes. Little Angels has worked with many out of state families. We would love to meet all the families in person prior to signing a contract, but that is not possible. We would need to review your home study and have a phone interview proir to signing a contract with you. Out of state families must comply with ICPC regulations.

Can we adopt an older child?

From time to time a birth parent will wait until after her baby is born to place the child for adoption. Little Angels has placed older children from 6 weeks of age to 7 years. Although this is not the most common adoption scenerio, it does happen. In this case, the mother needs help immediatly and the placement usually happens very quickly. For adoptive parents, when this situation arises, we will place the child with the family who is the most suitable and who is home study ready.
